Unveiling the Ultimate 4-Step Night Time Skincare Routine

Updated: Sep 30

A sister post to the 5-Step Morning Skincare Routine, this easy 4-Step Night time skincare routine will build upon the steps used in your morning routine to continue to transform your skin's radiance and glow as you sleep.

A night time skincare routine is vital to help your skin rejuvenate and repair after a long day. While a complex routine might seem overwhelming, a simple 4-step process can work wonders. Let's dive into the ultimate night time skin care routine that will leave your skin feeling refreshed and revitalized!

Night Time Skin Care Routine

Step 1: Cleanse

It is crucial to cleanse your face every night to remove the pollutants, makeup, and impurities that have built up during the day. If you don't wear makeup regularly, a mild, water based cleanser will work for this step. If you do wear makeup on a daily basis like I do, I recommend doing a double cleanse, which sounds harder than it is. First start with an oil-based cleanser to thoroughly remove all traces of makeup, without stripping your skin of its natural oils. Follow up with a gentle water based cleanser to ensure all remaining impurities are removed.

Double Cleansing:

Starting off with your oil-based cleanser, apply a couple of pumps onto a dry face and massage gently. Then be sure to emulsify with water by wetting your hands with a little warm water and continue massaging. Rinse thoroughly with warm water, making sure all of the cleanser is washed off. Immediately follow this step with a gentle water based cleanser.

There are so many great cleansers on the market. I could list countless, however the two that I use exclusively and have repurchased more times than I can count are linked below.

Step 2: Tone

Toning is a crucial step that often gets overlooked. Applying a toner helps in balancing your skin's pH levels and prepping it for better absorption of subsequent products. It also helps removes any impurities cleansing did not remove.

The amount of toners on the market is overwhelming, even for me. Luckily, I recently came across a toner that I absolutely love and it is receiving great reviews from professionals across the industry. The Tower 28 SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray is my favorite overall toner. Not to mention it also has the Seal of Acceptance from the National Eczema Association.

Before I found Tower 28, I was using SK-II Facial Treatment Toner which I will always love and will always be in my rotation. It is on the pricier side however it is totally worth it, in my opinion. Another more affordable option is SKINFOOD Royal Honey Propolis Enrich Essence.

Step 3: Treat

This step involves using targeted treatments like serums or spot treatments to address specific skin concerns, such as acne, fine lines, or pigmentation. Applying these treatments before moisturizing allows the active ingredients to penetrate deeper into the skin.

I have a few products that I use in my rotation, depending on the needs of my skin. Some of my favorites include:

  • Caudalie Vinoperfect Dark Spot Serum reduces the appearance of dark spots. This is the most used serum in my rotation. I love how it feels on my skin. It is worth every penny.

  • Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops. This serum will even out your skin due to the niacinamides. It will also leave you looking extra dewy and moisturized. I also apply this product before putting on make up.

  • Tretinoin: This is a prescription strength retinol. I will use this a few times a week and I get it from my dermatologist.

Step 4: Moisturize

Hydration is the key to healthy and glowing skin. A good moisturizer locks in moisture, strengthens the skin's barrier, and prevents water loss overnight.

I like my night time creams to be a bit more thick and heavy compared to my day time creams. My favorites are Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream and Pyunkang Yul Moisture Cream.

By following this easy 4-step night time skin care routine consistently, you can achieve radiant and healthy skin. Remember, skincare is a form of self-love, and investing time in your skin will yield long-term benefits.
